The World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) is the pinnacle of global time attack competition. In 2025, Kunihiko Bando and his team made their WTAC debut with the newly built RSC300, taking on some of the fastest and most advanced time attack machines in the world.
Who is Kunihiko Bando ?
An engineer, builder and driver in pursuit of speed.
Kunihiko Bando is one of Japan’s leading grassroots time attack competitors, ranking among the fastest tuning-car drivers ever to lap Tsukuba Circuit—the spiritual home of Japanese time attack.
Unlike professional race teams backed by manufacturers and large budgets, Bando is deeply involved in every aspect of the project. From concept and engineering to fabrication and driving, he helps shape every detail of the machine he competes with.
For decades, while many competitors changed platforms in pursuit of speed, Bando remained committed to the Toyota Soarer. His philosophy has always been simple: if the part he needs does not exist, he designs and builds it himself.
That relentless pursuit of performance ultimately led to the creation of the RSC300—a purpose-built machine that set the third-fastest tuning-car lap in Tsukuba Circuit history and is widely regarded as the fastest Toyota Soarer ever built.
Built not by a factory team, but through passion, ingenuity and determination, the RSC300 was created to challenge the world’s best time attack machines on the biggest stage of all: WTAC.

But the challenge ended in a way nobody expected.
Just half a lap into practice, the RSC300 suffered a major crash and was forced to retire.
The story that was meant to showcase Japan’s passion, engineering, and determination to the world instead ended in disappointment. The damage to the car was severe, and many believed it would take years before the RSC300 could return to competition. After years of development and preparation, the WTAC campaign appeared to be over in less than half a lap.
Yet neither Kunihiko Bando nor his team were willing to give up.

Immediately after the car returned to Japan, the team began rebuilding the RSC300 from the ground up. Working tirelessly day and night, they accomplished what many thought was impossible.
Only one month later, the car completed its shakedown test.

Then, as the Japanese time attack season began, the RSC300 returned to Tsukuba Circuit and achieved a new personal best lap time. Competing against some of the strongest teams in Japan, the car recorded the third-fastest lap in Tsukuba history.
A comeback that many believed impossible had become reality. The spirit that carried this challenge forward can be summed up in one phrase:
FUTOFUKUTSU (不撓不屈)
A Japanese expression meaning unbreakable determination—the strength to keep moving forward no matter the obstacles, and to rise again after every setback.
From rebuilding after a devastating crash to returning to the world stage, this spirit perfectly represents Kunihiko Bando and the RSC300 project. That is why we chose to feature “FUTOFUKUTSU” on this year’s supporter merchandise.
Returning to WTAC in 2026
In 2026, Kunihiko Bando and the RSC300 will once again challenge the world’s best at WTAC.
Following the setback of 2025, the team rebuilt, returned to the track, and proved that the spirit of FUTOFUKUTSU remains stronger than ever.

This is more than a racing campaign.
It is a challenge to showcase Japanese time attack culture on the world stage, and to demonstrate what can be achieved through passion, ingenuity, and determination.
